December 11th, 2012 – As part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), better known as Obamacare, 190 million Americans will be charged a new $63 per person fee to help offset some of the cost of covering people with pre-existing conditions.
The Obama administration says it is a temporary assessment designed to raise $25 billion. It will be levied for three years starting in 2014. It starts at $63 and then declines.
The regulation says the program “is intended to help millions of Americans purchase affordable health insurance, reduce unreimbursed usage of hospital and other medical facilities by the uninsured and thereby lower medical expenses and premiums for all.”
