January 7th, 2020 – While open enrollment closed at the end of December for much of the country, in Colorado we get an extra 15 days to get coverage for the new year. Open enrollment for individuals and families who buy their own health insurance will continue through Wednesday, January 15th.
After Open Enrollment for 2020 closes on Jan. 15th, Colorado residents who buy their own insurance can only sign up for a plan if they experience a “qualified life event,” like losing job-based insurance, losing Health First Colorado (Medicaid) or certain family changes. However, eligible Coloradans can still apply for Health First Colorado (Medicaid) year around.
While there is concern over the recent Fifth Circuit Court decision in the Texas v. Azar case regarding the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the ACA law is still in full force while the case moves through the legal process. Colorado also has state laws that protect those with pre-existing conditions.
