March 20th 2020 – In response to the Coronavirus or COVID-19 pandemic, the Colorado Division of Insurance announced a new Special Enrollment Period for uninsured Coloradans. The Special Enrollment Period begins today and ends April 3rd, all for individual and family health insurance plans with an April 1st start date.
This unprecedented emergency Special Enrollment Period allows people who do not currently have coverage to enroll in an individual health insurance plan. It applies to uninsured adults and children, even if a spouse or a child’s parent is already insured. However, it does not apply to employer sponsored group health insurance plans.
With the economic uncertainty, we want to remind Coloradans that if they lose their job and were covered by an employer-based health insurance, that loss of coverage gives them a 60-day Special Enrollment Period to enroll in individual coverage, which may have lower premiums than COBRA or State Continuation coverage options.
