With all the recent talk about reform in the health services sector, it is interesting to note the health insurance industry’s support. The industry is trying to ensure that no one is left out of the health care system due to health, income, age or employment status.
According to a proposal from America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), the health insurance industry widely supports proposed guarantee issue health insurance coverage regardless of pre-existing health conditions in conjunction with a federal mandate that everyone have health insurance, either through their job or purchased on an individual level.
Senator Max Baucus, Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee presented a detailed plan to President Elect Barack Obama that includes an individual health insurance mandate.
AHIP supports a system that promotes tax equity between people that get insurance through and employer and those who purchase their insurance individually.
AHIP also supports refundable tax credits for moderate income individuals and families and expansion of Medicaid to provide quality care for poorer Americans, stating that Universal Health Care is within reach.
